The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opens at Hastings to-day, and will be concluded to-morrow. The principal events to be run to-day are the Hawke’s Bay Cup, of 1500 sovs., Hawke’s »Bay Stakes, of 700 sovs., and the Porangahau Handicap, of 500 sovs. On Thursday the prineinal interest will centre on the Burke Memorial Handicap, of 1000 sovs., the J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup, of 755 sovs., and the Okawa Handicap, of 400 sovs. Other events are also well endowed, and judging by the fields carded racing should bo first-class.
Both Duo and Gasbag showed signs of a hard racing season after their recent efforts, and it is about time they were sent Into winter quarters.
Borealis Is one of the most unfortunate cnares racing lately, always filling minor places. Judging by her form at Awapuni she should not be long in rewarding Mr. F. Waller with a decent win.
Silver Link’s second to The Hawk in the Manawatu Stakes added another £l5O to her winnings, which aggregate £8760 to date.
Mr. Geo. Currie has had the bad luck to lose a filly by Absurd—Our Lady. She was one of the finest looking of the imported horses "gets,” and her loss is a serious one to her breeder.
Alf. Tricklebank went across to Hastings yesterday to ride Cymer in his engagements at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. The Elysian gelding shapes pretty well in Tricklebank’s hands.
Bindle is improving with every gallop now, and if started at Hastings should have a big following.
Truthful has cost punters a lot of money lately, but if all they say is true the Demosthenes filly will repay the debt with interest before long. Dribble is being schooled at present, but report says that she does not take kindly to the game.
It is more than likely that Loyal Irish will be sent across to Sydney for early spring racing. Although a big price was recently refused for the Absurd two-year-old, Williamson might be tempted to accept a bigger one from some Aussie profiteer on the look out for a representative of suck a successful strain. Taranaki trotting enthusiasts rolled up In good numbers at Awapuni on Friday last, and the success, of Taranaki, horses, together with first-class dividends, was greatly appreciated. Mr. Angus Keith operated the new Kearney starting device at the Manawatu trots, and it gave universal satisfaction. Mr. IJ. Cameron, whose debut it was as a trotting judge, had only two close finishes to adjudicate.
The Trial Handicap attracted a big crowd of "roughies,” and the favorite, Aloondri.fr, wen all the way, finishing half a furlong in front of Mr. L, Goodger's Special Tracey, with Azelzion a. poor third.
There was big money for Sidelight (C. Kaspar) in the Stewards’ Handicap, but Brandon, who was second favorite, was never headed, and won comfortably from Humariki, with the favorite next.
Afr. W. Duggan’s Mat Patch (Barraclough) upset a warm order in Simple Peter in the Linton Handicap. This pair made practically all the running, and Mat Patch won on the post by a narrow margin. It looked as if Barraclough took things rather easy on the winner. However, he won, and paid a nice "price” to boot. The Cup drew a good field of fifteen, favoritism resting on Lady Pointer, with Day Drift, Onyx, Rita Rye and Warlock backed in that order. Bushchild was coupled with William the First. The last-named was never further back than third, and going along the back the last time was lying second to Waiteranui, with Warlock third. Waiteranul was challenged by Williaun the First and Warlock in the straight, and a splendid race home saw Adams score with Warlock (Barraclough), with Waiteranul half a length away third. The winner went smoothly throughout, but was a trifle lucky to beat Warlock. Day Drift fell.
The Bracelet was voted a moral for Azelzfon (Craw), but Special Tracey (Goodger) led over the last six furlongs, and beat the favorite without much difficulty Prince Burlington, 60yds behind, was best backed in the Awapuni Handicap, but failed to catch the limit pair, Jewell Wood (Shaw) and Peace (Neick), the former running in an easy winner.
There was not much between Nighborn (Jarden) and Lady Nan (Shadbolt) when the tote closed on the Palmerston Handicap,. and over the laa f six furlongs nothing else a
chance, Lady Nan winning an interesting race after a good set-to in the straight. Lady Pointer, Onyx and Warlock (coupled with Lovelock) carried most coin in the Pre- i sident’s Handicap, but a bad mix up spoilt the race as far as Lady Pointer and Warlock were concerned, and the winner turned up in Phil Smith (M. Edwards), who just scrambled home Ln front Qf Onyx, who disputed every inch of it in the run up the straight. The mishap appeared to have been caused Lady Pointer and The Bath colliding, and Warlock (Barraclough) and Nelson Derby were travelling so fast close up that they were uaablt tb avoid the clash.
