DISTRICT NEWS.

MANGATOKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The soaking rain’ of last Saturday week was very beneficial to the district. On Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. T. Linn, of Mangatoki, entertained members of the Eltham and Mangatoki Presbyterian Bible Class. About fifty were present, and a very pleasant social evening was spent. T’Je second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Carter met with a painful accident last Friday, breaking his arm while playing football at We are pleased to see that the cutting on the Eltham Road, known as the Devil’s Elbow, is being improved. This is a dangerous corner, and its improvement will be very much approved of by travellers, adding greatly to the safety of the road.

The Mangatoki sports, which were postponed recently owing to inclement weather, took place on Tuesday. In the evening “The Pink Serenaders” were again welcomed by a very large audience, who showed their appreciation by many encores. There was a dance after the concert. The local school tennis tournament for the best player during the season was won by Russel Carter, of the Hunter Road.

The cold weather has made a great reduction in the quantity of milk going to the factory. The sharp frost recently will not improve things.
