LEYLAND v - ANY TRUCK! QO far in our Truck advertising we have not descended to the naming of Trucks or people) but now Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., have done so in an advertisement, we are for the present inclined to adopt the same methods. We desire to place certain facts before the public which they can read in conjunction with the statements contained in the report by Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., of the informal test held on behalf of the Rahotu Dairy Co. recently. Under date March 12th, the Rahotu Dairy Co. (who have had a 5-ton White in use about eighteen months), wrote us stating, inter alia:—“We are not by any means satisfied with our Truck as regards oil and fuel consumption, etc.,” and asked us to arrange to do a day’s work for them with a Leyland to enable them to get a comparison with their machine.This was arranged for March 23rd, and on arriving at Rahotu we found a 3J-ton White Truck, which had been carefully tested on the proposed trip for more than a week previously, had horned in on the demonstration to compete as well. We raised no objection, although our truck was carrying its first load that day, having had a temporary body fitted at Clement’s sawmill the previous night, and so it had not been tested under load. The result of the test was that the 5-ton White never reached her destination that day, as owing to the anxiety to catch up with the Leyland, it got along 20 miles and then tore its main drive shaft clean out! This although the truck was being driven by the WHITE EXPERT from, the U.S.A. Factory. Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., had the pleasure of towing this machine to their Garage the same night, but prior to that done the chairman of the Dairy Company had the oil measured off for the distance the truck had run, and found that it had used one pint for every 4 mifes, or 5 pints for the 20 miles covered, whereas we used less than 1 pint in 31 miles, and would not have used any more if the truck had run a month; but the 3|-ton White actually had more oil at the finish than we saw measured in at the start! QUESTION: —Why were the above facts not mentioned in our friends’, the enemy’s advertisement? ANSWER:— Because the trial proved to the Dairy Co. concerned what they wanted proof of. Further, the 34-ton White took 14 minutes longer to cover the journey than the Leyland did. This also was not mentioned, neither was the difference in total weight, the gross loaded weight of the Leyland being 9 tons llcwt., against 84 tons gross loaded weight of the 3|-ton White. Now we are going to ask a few questions and make a few statements, and ask Messrs. Newton King ’to answer them, or leave the public of Taranaki to draw its own conclusions:— » 1. Why was our £5O challenge not accepted ? 2. Is our £l5O challenge going to be accepted? In regard to this if Newton King, Ltd., think their advertisement proves either to themselves or to the public that they have beaten, or can beat, the Leyland, why not pick up a cool £l5O for the mere sake of proving it again ? The terms and conditions of our challenge can be adjudicated upon as to fairness by any three independent engineers mutually agreed upon, and our only provisos are that the distance must not be less than 100 miles, and the overload • 25 per cent., and that 2 Trucks each of any range of tonnage from two to five be used by both, and the result to be determined on the average result of the two. 3. Is there any White Truck in use in New Zealand to-day that will run every day of the week for FIVE MONTHS, and use only 1 pint of oil?—The Stratford County’s Leyland did. 4. Will Newton King Ltd., give a written guarantee with any White Truck to always do 2500 miles per gallon of oil? We will with every Leyland sold. 5. Is there any White heavy truck that will carry an overload of 25 per cent, to 50 per cent, for 9500 miles in 6 months on an average benzine consumption of 84 to 10 .miles per gallon? The Eltham County’s Leyland did. 6. Will Newton King, Ltd., give a written guarantee of a minimum benzine consumption of 7 miles per gallon with every White Truck sold? We will with Leylands. 7. Have there been over 100 White Trucks sold in New Zealand in 1920? There were Leylands. 8. How many White Trucks have been sold in Taranaki sin<?t£ say, last July, when we commenced in the Truck business? 9. How does this list of our sales, including some who have experienced using White Trucks, appeal to them and the public?: — Stratford, Eltham, «tHawera, Waimate West and Waitotara County Councils, Awatuna and • Moa Dairy Companies, C. E. Fowler, Stratford; J. Tapp and Son and C. E. Crowley (Hawera); A. E. Parkes, Opunake, and M. Priest (New Plymouth)., carriers; and W. C. Clements (Sawmiller, Te Kiri). 10. Does this list prove anything? And can Newton King, Ltd., publish a similar list of Taranaki sales for the same period? WILSON’S MOTOR SUPPLIES, LTD. “LEYLAND” TARANAKI AGENTS.
