The annual meeting of the North Taranaki Hunt was held on Saturday. Mr. B. H. Chaney presiding. THE YEAR’S WORK. In presenting the fifteenth annual report and balance-sheet the committee expressed pleasure at being again able to congratulate members on a successful season, the balance-sheet showing a credit balance of £315. The report continued :

Hunting.—lt is to be regretted, /however, that, while in every other way successful, the standard of hunting was not up to that reached by the Hunt in previous seasons. This was due to the fact that hares were not as plenitful as formerly, while also quite a considerable area of good hunting country previously used was not available last season. Membership.—The membership of the Hunt continues to increase, but it is felt that much more support might be expected from the coastal district from Opunake north. Your committee suggests that an endeavor be made to interest coast sportsmen in the Hunt, and it may be advisable to set up a committee to visit the Opunake and intermediate district with this object in view, and to arrange meets if possible in that district.

Property—The property question is becoming a serious one, and your committee suggests that members seriously consider the adoption of “drag hunting”. The Hunt is under a deep debt of gratitude to those farmers who so kindly permit the use of their land, and members can best show their appreciation of the obligation they are under to these farmers by exercising the greatest care in keeping clear of forbidden property.

Race meeting.—Your committee desires to record its sincere thanks to the Taranaki Club for the free use of its course and conveniences for the late Hunt Club races, and also to all those who in other tkvays assisted in making the race meeting the success it was. Members will be pleased to know that the club now has an annual permit to race, and the next race meeting may be held in September. Your committee especially desires to record its thanks to Mr. j. R. L. Stanford, who acted as judge, and made a generous donation to the club’s funds, to the handicapper (Mr. B. Coyle), to Messrs. C. H. Weston, A. Alexander and others, for generous donations to the funds of the Hunt The thanks of the committee is also due to the secretary for the manner in which the race meeting was managed. The report stated that during the year Mr. L. Pepperell was appointed huntsman, vice Mr. E. Mason, resigned. In conclusion, the report impressed on members the wisdom of increasing the membership, particularly of active followers, and, by all julllng tog«U«r, making

North Taranaki one of the Dominion’s leading hunts. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said it was not only desirable to get more members, but also to persuade them to secure good horses and take an active interest in the hunt. This would do a great deal to help the hunt along. The question was often asked why they did not put on a race for members of the hunt club, but at present he thought it would be hard to get a good field.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Hon. 0. Samuel, M.L.C.; president, Mr. A. R. Standish; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Alexander, N. King, L. A. Nolan, C. H. Weston, S. G. Smith, W. T. Jennings, A. L. Humphries, L. Birdling, W. McKenzie, F. H. Sampson, A. W. Budge, and 8. Pitt; master of the hunt, Mr. A. H. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr. E. Mason for his services as member of the club and in the capacities of huntsman and deputymaster. A sub-committee was set up to interview farmers and arrange fixtures, with a view to securing properties over which to hunt. A vote of thanks was passed to the Taranaki Jockey Club for giving the upe of its course foi the Hunt’s annual meeting. Mr. C.
