HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.

STEADY PROGRESS AT . MANGAHAO. The executive of the Mangahao HydroElectric Power League paid a visit of inspection to the Mangahao works on the 7th inst. In its official report the executive states: — “We desire to congratulate the Minister for Public Works and the engineering staff on the continued steady progress made. There is a general feeling of efficiency and purposefulness about the works which it is most pleasing to note, and which argues well for the completion of the works well within the ■time by the Minister, viz., Christmas, 1923. "Labor is freely offering, and about 220 men are now employed on the undertaking. “We wish to again note the excellent work that has been, and is being done on the job by the Y.M.C.A. The department is now providing a canteen at the Arapoiti camp for the use of the men, thus relieving the Y.M.C.A. from this work, but the efforts to provide some reasonable recreation for the men are worthy of all praise. The energetic secretary, Mr. Campbell, in addition to his other duties, provides a picture programme three times weekly, and has lately taken on the duty of schoolmaster to the children of the camp. A work such as this is worthy of every encouragement. “Your executive again desires to bring under the notice of members the absolute importance of pressing forward the preparations to distribute the electricity when available. We note with regret that quite a large portion of the country districts have as yet not formed any boards. We trust this preliminary step will be taken before the annual meeting o£ the league in June, so that steps may be taken on that occasion to consider questions of policy and finance common to all boards.”
