THE WAGES ISSUE.

TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT REFUSED. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. Received April 17, 5.5 p.m. London, April 15. In the House of Commons, Mr. Lloyd George said he had just received a letter from the Miners’ Federation refusing a temporary settlement of wages unless national wages and a national pool were conceded. There could be no doubt what the issue would be. The Government was firmly of opinion that surrender on the question of control would be disastrous to the interests of the 'country. It was thoroughly realised by the Government that this is not a struggle in order to challenge the owners’ figures. This statement was made just prior to the announcement that the strike had been declared off.—Aus.-Iff Z. Cable
