A cable from Sydney reports the death of Mr. C. E. Beckett, secretary of the Birt Company, who dropped dead while playing golf.

Miss C. D. Grjint, who for many years was on the teaching staff of the New Plymouth High School, has been appointed headmistress of the Girls’ Grammar School at Fiji. Sister Fricker, sub-matron of the Hamilton Hospital, is at present staying at the North Egmont Mountain House.

Mr. Arthur Roberts, the well-known builder and contractor of New Plymouth, had the misfortune on Saturday to almost completely sever his left thumb while using a hatchet. The doctor who attended Mr. Roberts hopes that the thumb will be saved.

Mr. J. Kenny, one of the best known and most popular travellers in Taranaki, who has recently left the road after about 14 years in Taranaki in order to enter into business on his own account in New Plymouth, was met by a number of fallow commercials l at the Terminus Hotel on Thursday evening last. Mr. H. Brookman, an old traveller, on behalf of the gathering, presented I\Jr. Kenny with a silver-mounted walking, some Doulton ware, at the same time making reference to the many sterling qualities which had made Mr. Kenny so highly esteemed by his fellow commercials and those with whom he had come in contact. Mr. Kennv suitably replied.
