RECRUITS REQUIRED. yOUTHS between the ages of 17 and 18 will now be accepted for training in H.M.S. “Philomel,” as Seamen in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. Cases in which youths will be 17 by the end of June will be specially considered. NOTE.—'Boys between ages of 15 and 17 will be eligible for entry when subsequent classes are formed. Men between the ages of 18 and 22 will also be accepted for training as stokers. The first classes will be formed during the first week in MaV, when successful candidates will be required to join H.M.S. “PHILOMEL” at Auckland. Application should be made to the Defence Office nearest the candidate’s place of residence, from which office any further particulars can be obtained. A selection of the most suitable candidates will be made from the list of applicants. Selected candidates will be required to engage for 12 years from date of entry, or if under 18 then till that age is reached and for 12 years after, at the end of which period they may re-engage for further service. They will be eligible for service in any part of the woj-ld, and in any ship of'the Royal Navy or Navies of the Dominions. The following minimum physical standard is required: YOUTHS (SEAMEN CLASS); Mean chest Age. Height. Measurement, ft. in. inches.

Candidates will be educationally examined in Dictation and Arithmetic. (First four rules). Candidates must possess full normal vision in both eyes, and will be required to pass both provisional and final medical examination before being finally accepted. Candidates must be British subjects of European extraction, and will be required to produce their Birth Certificate. The commencing rates of pay are as follows: Stokers, 2nd class 5/6 Boys, 2nd class 1/- .. Ist class 1/9 Oridnary Seamen, 2nd class .. 2/6.. (Boys over 17). Ordinary Seamen (at 18 years of age) 5/And, in addition, deferred pay, free uniform kit and an allowance for its upkeep. Free rations and accommodation are provided. A special allowance is paid during leave in lieu of provisions. On completion of twelve years’ service accumulated deferred pay will be payable in a lump sum. Both classes of ratings are eligible for advancement to higher ratings, and, if specially recommended, to Warrant or Commissioned rank. By Command of the Naval Board. J.
