THE CHIEF JUSTICE.
Among the many prominent men who have deservedly gained high honor in the Dominion, Sir Robert Stout stands in the foremost rank. Having occupied the highest positions in the country, Premier, Chief Justice, Lieutenant-Gover-nor, and Chancellor of the University, and adorned these and other positions with complete success, some conception can be obtained of his services to the country. The rapidity of his rise at the Bar and in politics affords striking testimony to his exceptional ability and thoroughness, while the active interest he has taken in other spheres of work, especially those for the moral and intellectual uplifting of the people, testify to his versatility and intense public spirit’. His career should be an inspiration to all who are desirous of giving of their best in public life. That career is, we are pleased to know, still going on, but die well-earned .break he is now taking afforded a fitting opportunity for the members of the Bar to do him honor, eulogise his services, and present' him with his portrait. It may be confidently assumed that this genuine testimony to the work of Sir Robert Stout is shared by people of all classes in the Dominion, and they join in the hope that both Sir Robert and Lady Stout will gain much pleasure and renewed health in their trip to the Motherland, and will return to render further services \to the country and its citizens.
