MOUNT EGMONT QUARRY.

GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS. PROSPECTS FOR SECURING METAL. In the course of the short session of Parliament Mr. R. Masters (Stratford) asked the Minister of Public Works whether, in view of the fact that in reply to the Minister’s request when visiting Taranaki asking for a statement of the amount of metal that would be required by the local bodies if the Mount Egmont quarries were re-ropened, a reply has been received to the effect that their requirements will total 100,000 cubic yards per annum; and, as the engineer of the Public Works Department, in estimating the maximum quantity at 60,000 cubic yards per annum that would be required to secure a minimum price, whether he will assist the local bodies concerned by expediting the opening of the quarries so that metal may be available next season?

The Hon. Mr. Coates (Minister of Public Works) replied as follows: The Government will construct the railway as fast as the funds available will permit. It is doubtful whether the metal will be available next season, as special machinery must be selected, imported and installed.
