Mr. M. Fraser (chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board) returned from Wellington last night after giving evidence before the Hospital Commission. Mr. C. S. Rush, business manager of the Manawatu Daily Times, has disposed of bis interest in that journal, and. purchased the Dargaville News. Mr. W. Lille< of Manaia, has been appointed manage/ of the Waimate Demonstration Farm, in succession to Mr. Jas. Dakers, who resigned. Mr. W. J. H. Reynolds, of the Fartaers’ Auctioneering Co., Hamilton, was on a visit to New Plymouth yesterday, and leaves this morning for Wellington. A Sydney cable reports the death of the Rev. Benjamin Danks, ex-general secretary of the Australasian Missionary Society. A Berlin message reports that Captain von Mueller of the Emden, who was reported to have been shot in Poland by the police, was not killed, and is now delivering lectures on his war experiences. The Rev. W. J. Elliott, accompanied by Mrs. Elliott and Miss Elliott, arrived in New’ Plymouth on Thursday even-, ing. Mr. Elliott commences his ministry at Whiteley Church to-morrow. The death took place on Wednesday of Mrs. George Gibson, of Eftham. She and her husband, after many years of hard farm work, had recently left Riverlea to settle down to a restful life in Eltham. The late Mrs. Gibson was of friendly disposition and very kindhearted, says the Argus. Dr J. H. Shaw, of Trinity College, Melbourne, has been appointed to the resident medical staff of the Melbourne Hospital for a period of twelve months from May 1. Dr. Shaw is a son of Mr. Stanley Shaw, of New Plymouth. Captain M. C. Campbell, of the steamer Malaita, which arrived at New Plymouth on Thursday from Walpole Island, New Caledonia, was accompaniei on the voyage by his wife and family. Airs. Campbell is a daughter of Mr. R. B. D. Eyre, Collector of Customs at New Plymouth The results of the examinations held in England last October by the Institute of Civil Engineers have been issued. The friends of Mr. Gordon McLean Beck will be pleased to hear that he is one of the five New Zealanders who passed the preliminary. Mr. Beck is an old New Plymouth High School boy, and is

now on the staff of the railway engineers, Christchurch. Mr. T. R. Strang, who has held the position of senior telegraphist at the New Plymouth Post Office for the last three years, was made a presentation on Thursday, by the New Plymouth telegraph staff, on the eve of his departure to take up the position of supervisor of the Dunedin telegraph office. Mr. J. Hall, of the New Plymouth staff, has been promoted to the vacancy caused by Mi. Strang’s departure. The Premier (Mr. W. F. Massey), who leaves Auckland to-day by the Niagara for Vancouver, en route to London, arrived at Auckland yesterday and Mr. Massey and Mrs. Massey were last night guests at an “At Home” given by Auckland citizens. The Hons J. G Coates, D. H. Guthrie, C. J. Parr, W Nosworthy, Sir Heaton Rhodes and Dr. Pomare are in Auckland to farewell the Premier.— Press y Association. A farewell to Mr. J. Paton who is leaving New Plymouth to reside in Auckland, was tendered by the vestry of St. Mary’s Church, the trustees of the Taranaki Church Trust, and tho trustees of the New Plymouth Parochial Trust, at the Victoria League rooms yesterday afternoon. The Rev. F. G. Harvie, who presided, made eulogistic reference to the great services Mr, Paton had rendered to the church generally during his residence in New Plymouth. Mr. S. Percy-Smith (chairman of the Taranaki Church Trust), Mr. W* Brooking (chairman of the New Plymouth Parochial Trust), Mr. S. W. Shaw (on behalf of the vestry), Mr. W. H. Skinner, and Mr. H. E. Fookes also paid tributes to Air Paton’s work. In the course of his reply, Mr. Paton said speakers were over generous in their remarks and his work in connection with church ma.tte.ra had been a of love.
