TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa”.) Manawatu Stakes to-day. Manawatu annual trots to-morrow. Statuette has gone into winter quarters. Vigilo is now a member of Tommy George’s team. The veteran, Simple Sam, retains his pace in remarkable style. Alf. Shears by has given up Miss Love as a bad job, and has returned her to her owner. A Hunterville sport informs the writer that the Hallowmas colt Hallowell has grown into a fine cut of a horse, and should race well next season While contesting the Waiata Stakes at Feilding, Sunny Vale broke down badly, and is unlikely to sport silk again this season. A Palmerston scribe states that Warplane will not be persevered with further on the tracks, and will be sent to the stud next season. It is reported that H. Gray’s last appearance—for some time, at least—in the saddle in New Zealand will be at Awapuni to-day. He sails for England at an early date. Silver Link is set a stiff task to give Tamatete and Absurdum 251bs and 321bs respectively in the Manawatu Stakes to-day, but “the Desert Gold of the season” will keep the youngsters' doing their best all the same.
Arthur Oliver, who has made good as a trainer, has purchased a place near the Awapuni course, and is erecting up-to-date stables. Recent additions to his team are a half-sister to Statuette and a two-year-old King Mark gelding. Mr. J. B. Gaisford has Marqueteur’s full brother, Mark Time, looking bright and well, though he is not being bustled in his work, and will not be raced until three years old. Mark Time- resembles his illustrious brother in appearance, and should turn out a useful sort.
Shocking weather yesterday deterred many Wanganui and Marton sports from attending the opening day of the Manawatu autumn meeting. A high gale raged, and stinging blasts of icy rain xaade things the reverse of enjoyable for
the plucky ones who braved the elements.
The best two-year-old in Australia this season appears to be Furious, by The Welkin (imp.) out of Danaide, though she has little on her stablemate Isa (The Welkin—Teppo). Both fillies are owned by Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, and when they finished first and second in the A.Ji.U r Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick the outsider of the pair (Furious) won. Horses are not bracketed in Australia, and those who were on the right way received a good dividend. Pershore 'has gone amiss, and Mr. E. J. Watt will send him to the stud next season. The son of All Black and Perseis will take the place of Wolawa. The latter has been sold to Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, and will stand at Melton stud farm, a place ma/le famous by The Welkin, so that Wolawa will have unique opportunities of proving himself. As a racehorse Wolawa carried Mr. Clarke’s colors, and at two years won four races, including the V.R.C. Aseol Vale Stakes. As a three-year-old he won the V.R.C. Derby, V.R.C. St. Leger, and A.J.C. St. Leger, so that he combined speed with staying power. Being only foaled in 1909, Wolawa should have many years of usefulness before him.
Mr. J. Baron supplied a surprise packet in the Nursery Handicap at Randwick on Sydney Cup day, his two-year-old bay gelding Duke Isinglass (Duke Foote —Glass), who was one of the extreme outsiders of a big field, romping home in 1.14 for the six furlongs. Behind the winner were such speedy youngsters as Kiltray, Linita, Aik Gold, Challenge, Demetrius, Lady Bronzino, Gnat and Aerolith, but Duke Isinglass beat them pointless. Mr. Baron was well known as the owner of Prince Foote, Sir Foote and Duke Foote, and two good performers at present carrying his colors are Richmond Main and the much-boomed Pelaw Main.
The new judge’s box at Randwick, used for the first time at the autumn meeting, is an up-to-date structure. Standing well back from the outside rails, and with, an elevation of some twelve feet, it gives the judge every opportunity to correctly sort out the placed horses, no matter whether they finish near the inside rails, centre of the course, or on the outer. The foundation is solidly built of brick, with the roof supported by white pillars, the sides, back and front being open, so as not to obstruct the view. A splendid, illustration of the new structure appears in the Referee of March 30, and it is one that should be copied by enterprising clubs in New Zealand.
