Hawera Technical High School.—This work is making good progress towards completion.

Manaia New School. —The whole of the concrete work is completed; the roof is ready for the asbestos tiles; general good progress has been made with the whole work except the plastering; owing to the Hawera Technical and this work going on together we may be delayed over the plastering work somewhat. Toko Additions and Remodelling.—The whole of this work is completed except a small matter of fixing a stove and flue. The work has considerably the school generally. * Mangorei New School (rebuilding).— We have started this work. The building should be completed early next month.

The report also dealt with repair work at Inglewood, Raupuha, Huiroa, Lincoln, Urenui, Alakoia, Egmont Village, Oeo and Waitara.

The chairman was appointed a further representative of the board on the advisory committee of the New Plymouth Technical College. ft was decided that application be made for leave to sell the residence at Lincoln.

Application is to be made to the Department to sanction the expenditure of the grant for a residence at Ohura, by purchasing a property' recommended by th* 1 architect.

Messrs. Trimble and Deare ; reported having made a visit through the Ohura district in company with the architect, and submitted notes on various matters requiring consideration. Air. Alasters expressed thanks to the committee for the attention given, and said he was sorry lie was not able to accompany the party. The information given would prove useful, and would help the board to keep in touch with their back districts. As the result of the committee’s report it was decided that the architect be instructed to remove the Hurimoana school as soon as possible; that application be made for a grant for a movable school at Hapurua Road; that the position in connection with the erection of a school at Waitewhena be explained to the department, and they be asked to favorably consider the payment of the remaining liability of the settlers to the bank, which was incurred at the time of the erection of the school.

Reporting in connection with the outhouses and porch at Alatapu, AJessrs. Lees and Eaves stated:—The committee have collected £5O to go towards the installation of a septic tank system and £ll ,8a towards the cost of enlarging and lining the porch. An application is being made to the department for a subsidy on this amount, which will bring the total up io £122 As the committee have so generously found so much iii cash we recommend that this work be carried out as early as possible, It was decided that application be made to the department for a subsidy on the amount raised, and that special representations be put forward as to the urgency of the case as affecting the drainage system at the school.

• GENERAL. The senior inspector (Air. J. A. Valintine) forwarded a copy of a report made by Inspector Griffin on the West End gymnasium, which stated that it would be inadvisable to erect any permanent partition in the building, and suggested that a partition of green baize would meet the case.

Reporting on the question of additions at Okato, the senior inspector said at first sight it would seem that the school had a good claim to increased accoi. inodation. He recommended, however, that the application be held over until an inspector had paid a visit to the school with a view to ascertaining all the conditions in regard to the attendance. An application for additions at Oeo was reported by the senior inspector who expressed the opinion that it would be useless to approach the department just yet for further accommodation. Regarding the accommodation at Alokau, Air. A z alintine said the floor space per child was rather below the minimum allowance of 12 square feet. "The simplest way of meeting present conditions,” he said, “is to remove the partition which now serves to mark off the porch and to add a porch to the main building. This will give sufficient accommodation for the present, and it is recommended that. tUi« followed Tiero ie

every promise that the attendance at this school will increase rather than diminish.” It was decided that application be made to the department on the above lines.

The senior inspector recommended that the position in regard to additions at Meremere be reconsidered in six months’ time.

The attendance officer reported:—For the months of February and March 1 have sent out 121 warnings for irregular attendance to parents of children attending primary schools. Owing to urgent work on the Alanaia new sohool I have been unable to visit any schools, but expect to do so during April. Fifty schools failed to send in returns for the month of February, but on receiving warning these have come to hand. The returns show a very good attendance, there being very few bad cases reported. The resignation of the Rev. C. Strand from the Opunake committee was accepted, and the appointment of Mr. T. P. Hughson to the vacancy was confirmed. A grant of £2O was made to the Warea committee towards the cost of building a shelter shed. The Tokirima school was granted 80 fencing posts. -■* The Huirog, school committee requested assistance for the work of draining the school grounds and the matter was referred to Air. Alasters.

The shifting and enlarging of the shelter shed at Finnerty Road was referred to Messrs. White and Alasters. It was decided to affiliate with the Taranaki Progress League and the chairman was appointed delegate to the meetings of the league.

Application is to be made to fl department for a £ for £ subsidy un tlie sum of £22 8s raised by the Waitara committee.
