PLUNKET SOCIETY.

SECOND NURSE APPOINTED. At a meeting of the committee of the Plunket Society held on Monday last, the question of appointing a second nurse was discussed, and the general feeling was that the society should extend its field of work as far as possible. Nurse Petersen, when asked for her ideas upon the matter, stated that whilst the committee were discussing the question she had had mothers in from Omata and Lepperton who had said that many women in those places were anxiously awaiting the decision of this meeting, all hoping that a second nurse would be appointed, and they (the country visitors) felt sure that the outside districts would always be willing to do their share in supporting the society. After further discussion the president (Airs. Walter Weston) put the motion to the meeting, that a second nurse be appointed. It was carried unanimously, and Nurse Castle, subject to the approval of the Central Council, was appointed. The secretary ,was instructed to write to the Central Council and to Nurse Castle.

An interesting letter was then read, from the Minister of Internal Affairs, which letter had been sent in reply to the resolution urging stricter censorship of pictures, which was passed at the Dominion Conference in 1920. The Alinister’s reply stated “That the. Government has decided as from May 1 any film or portion of film in which thieving, robbery, murder or suicide is made the feature of such film, shall not be passed for exhibition Gn this Dominion. This is not intended to interfere with classical works in which any of these crimes is only an incident. Its object is to do away with the low class of picture which caters for the lowest and most depraved tastes of the community, and is likely to lead weak-minded people to follow the example of the crooks shown in the pictures. The censor has also been instructed to make more use of the appeal board, to which you will be pleased to know, a woman has recently been appointed.” The president then stated that a book had been received from the Central Council xfhich gave an open letter from Dr. Truby King upon the matter or moving pictures shown in the Dominion and she asked members of the committee to read it and pass it on to others. The nurse’s monthly report read as follows:—Number of babies on the list, old 114, new 8; visits paid to wpmen, old cases 129, new 26; visits received at office, adults 231, babies 208; advice to expectant mothers 2; milk made in homes 5; letters answered 1; babies who have left district or are over two years of age 29. One demonstration in the preparation of humanised milk. The society wishes to acknowledge the following subscriptions:—The Mayoress (Mrs. F. E. Wilson), £2 2s; Mesdames Fox £l, Moss 10s, Bent £l, Dockrill ss, AlcHardy ss, Potter 7s 6d, Steffensen ss, Bridger ss.
