VALUE OF TREE-PLANTING.
IMPORTANCE TO FARMERS. ADDRESS BY MR. MAXWELL. Mr. E. Maxwell, of Rahotu, who is Recognised throughout New Zealand as fcn authority on the question, gave a Very interesting address last night to the members of the Bell Block branch of the Farmers’ Union in the important guestion of tree planting for farmers. Mr. J. S. Connett, who presided, remarked that in the past they had been inclined to look upon afforestation as the duty of the Government, and had hot taken i.p the matter as individuals, though they realised at the back of their minds that it was an imporant matter to the individual as well as to the nation. Fanners had looked forward to ponerete taking the place of timber for posts, but with the increased, price of Bement and labor this proved too expensive. There was also the question of Shelter belts, which could be cut up into profitable timber. It was to be regretted that more belts had not been planted. However, it was useless regretting what had not been done in the past, but they should make the most of their present opportunities.
