Or-, ders for papers may also be left with. them. ’ BOROUGH COUNCIL. The general purposes committee of the Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), and Cr. R. H. Cameron, W. H. H. Young, A. Stewart, J. H. Thompson, C. Jackson, T. Lawson, W. J. Newton, C. B. Walsh and S. B. Hunter. MEAT AUCTION SALES. Mr. B. Sturm, auctioneer, appeared in support of an application for permission to sell quarters of mutton by auction. He stated that similar sales* to those which he proposed to hold were at present being held in Waitara, Eltham, Hawera, Wanganui and other towns.
In reply to Cr. Newton, Mr. Sturm said if was proposed to slaughter the meat at the borough abattoirs. The idea had come from the farmers, some of whom had considered it was more profitable to them to sell their meat in this way than by sending it to the sale yards. Replying to the Mayor, Mr. Sturm said it was not proposed to keep meat over from the sale, but should there be any over it would be stored in an icechest. It was to be sold entirely by auction and under hygienic conditions.
The Mayor said under the by-laws the council could not prohibit the applicant from selling meat. The application was granted subject to the approval of the health inspector. FIREMEN AT PICTURE THEATRE.
The secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote asking the council to arrange for payment to be made for attendance of firemen at the picture theatre, also for authority to deal with overcrowding. Letters were received from the New Plymouth and Hawera Borough Councils stating that firemen were engaged at the picture theatres. Mr. P. Aitken, secretary of the brigade, who was present said that at a recent meeting of the brigade the feeling was that the members would not attend the picture theatre unless paid for their services.
It was decided to notify the picture company that it was expected to employ one fireman, the fee to be paid to be 2s fid per night. COMMITTEE REPORTS. The works committee reported that the district railway engineer had been written to regarding the Fenton Street crossing; that the Opunake Road between Brecon Rfoad and Hamlet Street had been remetalled at a cost of £253 18s 7d; and that Pembroke Road between Brecon Road and Hamlet Street was now being re-metalled.—Adopted. The general committee reported that the painting of the roof of the Town Hall had been completed, and recommended that Messrs. Mcßain and Child’s tender for making alterations to the rails at the abattoir be accepted.— adopted, ELECTRICAL ENGINEER’S REPORT. The electrical engineer reported that the new Diesel engine had arrived atAuckland; that fourteen meters had been tested and ten erected; that three new consumers had been connected and five additions made to installations; and that the following units had been generated at the two stations during March, comparative figures being given for March last year: Hydro 9936 (24,465), a decrease of 14,529; Diesel 19,205 (4228), an increase of 14,977, being a total increase of 448 units. The total number of units generated for the year ended March 31 was 3-63,040, being an increase of 3947 over last year.—Received. GENERAL. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson wrote stating he was prepared to continue to act as representative of the borough on the New Plymouth Harbor Board.—lt was decided to nominate Mr. Wilkinson for the position.
Mr. Black wrote in connection with his repqrt on the council’s hydroelectric scheme, stating that he hoped to furnish the report at an early date, but at the same time he thought if the council needed relief, such relief should be obtained from the New Plymouth scheme. —Received.
It was resolved that the statement of receipts and expenditure and the estimates for the current year be discussed at the next meeting.
HOSPITAL BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held to-day. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), R. McK. Morison, C. R. Finnerty, J. O’Neill, R. H. Cameron, E. Marfell, J. T. Belcher, and G. P. Harkness. With reference to the Bank of New Zealand loan for buildings, the chairman reported that the sum of £3OO had been paid off! the loan since the last meeting, leaving only £3OO to be paid. This would clear the whole of the board’s liability, with the exception of the loan of £5OOO from the Public Trust Office for the recent additions, which was costing only 5| per cent, including sinking fund. He was very proud of being able to finance the loan on such satisfactory terms. The chairman reported that while in Wellington he had w-aited on Dr. Valentine and pointed out the advisability and necessity of having a duly qualified maternity nurse at Stratford. . Dr. Valentine had been very favorably impressed with the proposal and promised to give what assistance he could. The nurse would lie under the control of the board while in Stratford, although the tees received would be paid into the public account. He had instructed the secretary to write to Dr. Valentine in reference to the matter, but no reply had yet been received. Mr. Sole added that he had shown the plans of the proposed maternity hospital to tlie department officials and they were very pleased with them and agreed to do all in their power to assist the board "when it decided to go on with the matter. The chairman reported that the secretary had made arrangements for the supply of groceries and meat at 10 per cent less than the ordinary cost to the public. He explained that at the present time it was impossible to enter into contracts for these supplies, but he thought the arrangements made would be quite satisfactory.—The action of the chairman and secretary was confirmed. . The secretary of the Taranaki Prooresß League wrote urging that the board affiliate with the And
clos.ng a form of nomination for a member of the executive committee representing the Stratford electoral aistrict. —Received.
Dr. Steven, medical superintendent, reported that during March 29 patients were admitted, 34 discharged and there were four deaths. Nineteen remained in hospital at* the end of the month. Twelve operations were performed.— Received.
District Nurse Myers, W’hangamomona, reported that during the month of March she attended 12 medical and surgical cases, the fees paid being £5 10s.—Received.
The Director-General of Health wrote approving of the appointment of Dr. Williams Gowerby as acting superintendent of the hospital during the absence of Dr. Steven in. England.—Received.
Miss M. Slater forwarded her resignation as junior sister at the hospital. —The resignation was accepted. The vote for the ensuing year to be levied on the contributing local bodies was fixed at Is 2d in the £lOO of the capital value of the properties in the district. It was decided to hold a special meeting on April 19 for the purpose of confirming the hospital levy and dealing with the accounts. The chairman intimated that he would furnish a report at the meeting on the work done at the hospital during the year. GENERAL. The grand social and dance which is to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, April 20, under the auspices of the Pembroke Road .School Committee, gives every promise of being a thoroughly enjoyable function in every respect. The committee has already held a series of socials in the school which have been a splendid success and the function in the Town Hall is being arranged for the purpose of further augmenting the school piano fund. An excellent floor is promised and the music will be supplied by Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra. One of the features of the evening will be a waltzing competition for which good prizes are provided. Very reasonable prices are being charged for admission and it may be expected that Stratford residents will avail themselves of the opportunity of assisting a good cause and at the same time of spending an enjoyable evening. KING’S CINEMA THEATRE TONIGHT. LUBOWSKI FAMILY. The coming of Daniel Lubowski, a Russian boy 12 years old, whose tour of the world has given to thousands the opportunity to hear and marvel at his rare skill and complete mastery of his instrument and of the most difficult compositions will be a welcome event to the public of Stratford. The Lubowski family will play a well-chosen programme of selections from the masters of music. The English-Brenon production, “A Sinless Sinner,” starring Marie Doro will also be screened.
