AN INVALID PETITION.
SIGNATURES OF DEAD PEOPLE. AN EXTRAORDINARY POSITION. By Telegraph.- -Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. An extraordinary position has been revealed in connection with a petition sent to the City Council last week asking for a poll to be taken on the question of rating all properties in the city area on the basis of the unimproved values. As a result of an examination of the petition by the city valuer no poll will be held, one of the factors rendering the petition invalid being that some of the persons whose signatures appear thereon have been deas several years. A total of 937 names appeared on an old portion of the petition, and the valuer’s report gave instances of names attached to various sheets of the petition of persons who were no longer living. One, he said, died fourteen years ago in London, another eight years ago. one in 1917, and one in 1918. The city solicitor advises that the council could not treat these old signatures as valid, and the deductions left names representing only 12.5 per cent, of the ratepayers, which is below the required proportion, so no poll can be held.
