WAITARA.
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the local Returned Soldiers’ AssocicJon was held last week. The president (the Rev. G. H. Gavin) presided. ' The secretary reported that the position of the branch was very satisfactory. During the year they had gained 34 new members, and there had been 26 renewals and 26 transfers, the current roll number being 86. The financial position was good, there being no liabilities, and they had a credit balance of £B. The election of officers resulted: President, Rev. G. H. Gavin; vice-presi-dents, Rev. Lawrence and C. H. Tate; committee, Messrs. McDavitt, E. Clare, P. Feek, R. Kirby and W. Hawke; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Brabant; representative on Patriotic Committee, Rev. G. H. Gavin; representative on Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club, Mr. H. Brabant; delegate to annual conference, Air. H. Brabant. It was resolved that a ball be held annually, and that the first should take place on or about July 7 next.
MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Magistrate’s Court held last week the following cases came before Air. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M. Undefended Civil Cases.—Gaustad Marlow and Co. v. In a judgment summons case, Gaustad Marlow and Co. v. Jas. Dunlop, judgment was given for £7 14s to be paid within seven days, in default seven days’ imprisonment. The Collector of Customs proceeded against Geo. Sang, captain of the oil
launch Turanga, on charges of carrying excess cargo. An adjournment to New Plymouth was granted. L. T. Kendrick and Rangi Taura were each fined £2 and costs for being on licensed premises after, hours* A suni
lar charge against Colin Walker was withdrawn. I understand a meeting is to be called of the various societies in Waitara for the purpose of forming a Card Association. This is a good idea, and if formed will fill jin the winter evenings splendidly. Mr. \ T . Garth has already offered a cup -for competition, which no doubt will be very acceptable.
