OBITUARY.

MR. E. C. HORNER, PATEA. The death is announced of one of the oldest citizens of Patea in the person, of Mr. Edward Charles Horner, who passed away in his 69th year. Deceased was clerk of the Patea County Coun, cil, Harbor Board, and other public bod-ies-for a great number of years, in addition to carrying on an accountancy business. He was a man of high character, and was held in much esteem by all who knew him. The sad news will be especially regretted in South Taranaki, for Mr. Horner and his family were very well known and highly esteemed throughout the district. He was a man of very lovable character. Ha and Mrs. Horner had both been foremost in any good work for the benefit of their town. In Anglican Church matters they were for many years—all the time they had been in Pata—primon-' ent.

The deceased was married in 1885 to Miss Bessie Hirst, who, with a family of three sons and four daughters, survives him. The sons are Mr. Burnham Horner (of Stratford, who fieryed with distinction in the late war, gaining the Military Cross for gallantry on the Western front), Mr. E. O. Harner (Patea), and Mr. Bryan Horner (Gisborne). The daughters are Mrs. W. F. Sheild (Patea), Mrs. N. Symes (Otorohanga), Miss Ethel Horner wera), and Miss A. Horner (Patea). , t
