PRICE OF MEAT.

HOLDING OF AUCTION SALES? That the holding of public meat sales in New Plymouth is evidently contemplated was illustrated by an application made to last night's meeting of the Borough Council by an auctioneering firm (Messrs. Webster Bros.), who requested permission to sell fresh meat by public auction at their mart in Devon Street. They pointed out that fresh meat was already being disposed of in this manner in other towns of any size in the North Island. Sales would be. conducted in accordance with the requirements of the council. k Reporting on the request, the inspector (Mr. R. Day) stated: It is true that meat is being auctioned in other towns, and it has the price of meat. The purpose of our by-law is to secure that meat shall only be sold in suitable places, and although Webster’s place is new and clean at present, if the council admits the right to sell meat in auction rooms, then the next applicant may not have a suitable place. The Mayor (Mr. F, E. Wilson) remarked that although permission could be given, the council probably would not be desirous of running counter to the interests of the persons engaged permanently in the business and paying rates. In reply to Cr. W. F. Shdrt, the Mayor said that while the by-laws did not prohibit the holding of auction sales of meat, one regulation stated that any premises used for the sale oi. any article of food should, as far as practicable, be reserved for that purpose only. In regard to the inspector's comment that other applicants for a similar privilege might not have suitable premises, it was pointed out that if any such instance arose permission could be re* fused. On the motion of Cr. R. L. Parkin, seconded by Cr. J. Kibby, it was decided that permission be granted to applicants to hold the sales. 1
