THE STYMIE. U.S. ADOPT A NEW RULE. The efforts of the United States Golf Association and the British Rules Committee to preserve international harmony in the rules of golf have been furthered by an important step just taken by the U.S.G.A. It concerns the stymie. Mr. W. D Vanderpool, secretary of the U.S.G.A., now announces that his association has decided to eliminate all mention of the stymie in the rules. It has adopted a new rule which says simply: “When either ball is on the putting green, the player may remove the opponent’s ball; the opponent shall then be deemed to have holed in the next stroke.” This does not prevent anybody from preserving the stymie if he wishes to see it preserved, but it gives the right to remove an intervening ball if the player thinks it worth while giving his oppopent the putt, whatever its length. This new rule has the sanction and approval of the British Rules Committee of the Royal and Ancient Club, St. Andrew’s.
