DANGER OF READING BY CANDLE LIGHT. f The danger of reading by candle light was again stressed at the inquest on Charles Michael Smith, a widower, 68 years of age, residing with his son in Wellington, and who was burned to death on the night of April otti. Evidence revealed the fact that the deceased was a well-known figure as a foreman of the Union. Steam Ship Co. At about 7.15 p.m. on April sth his son went to the pictures, leaving deceased alone in bed. He was then reading the paper by the light of a candle. At about 9.10 p.m. on the same evening the house was seen to be oh fire. The building was gutted, and after the fire the body of deceased was found in his bedroom, lying on the floor near the doorway, face downwards. The body was removed to the morgue by Constable Hughes. The coroner returned a verdict that death had been due to burns sustained through the house accidentally catching fire, caused'by the candle which had been left burning, falling over after the deceased had fallen asleep.
