PRODUCERS’ SHIPS.
SCHEME TO COST 4J MILLION. PROPOSED PURCHASE OF 20 BOATS* By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' Timaru, April 9. At a meeting of the A. and P. Assoi ciation to-day a scheme proposed by Mr, Bernard Trip to overcome the freight shipping difficulty was unanimously approved and will be submitted to the committee appointed at the recent conference of producers in Wellington. The scheme proposed, that the Governs ment float a loan of £4,500,000 in Eng« land next November to be spent by th< producers’ committee to purchase 2d steamers of ten thousand tpns each. The boats are to be insulated and provided with some passenger accommodation and are to cost not more than £200,000 each. The scheme further provides that the Government should pass legislation imposing an import and export tax of 2 per cent to pay interest and sinking fund and when the loan is repaid thq tax to be removed. The Shipping Company should devote all pro« fits to reducing freights and passengeli fares instead of paying dividends.
