WEST END SCHOOL.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the West End School Committee was held last night, Mr. J. S. S. Medley presiding over a full atof members. The headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) reported that the roll number at the beginning of the year was 501, and had increased to 534 at the end of the March quarter. The average attendance had been 511.9. This was exceptionally good, and scholars’ parents were to be congratulated on the result. The school had now been placed in grade 7a, which entitled it to an extra assistant. Miss Wilson, from Maori Hill School, Dunedin, has taken the position vacated by Miss Jamieson, who has resigned, while Miss Mountford had been appointed temporarily to the vacancy caused through Miss O’Brien’s removal to Hillsborough. Miss Hodder was temporarily filling the position created through the rise in grade Prior to leaving the school Misses O’Brien and Jamieson were the recipients of presentations from the children staff and the school committee. Reference was made by the chairman to the fact that Mr. Bennett, who had been a very old member of the committee and had also been a very capable secretary, was not seeking re-election, and it was resolved to place on record the committee’s appreciation of his good work. Mr. Jas. Hawker, a committeeman of 10 years’ standing, also announced his intention of not seeking reelection. •
