Mr. Samuel Blake has been appointed a member of the Taranaki Land Board.
Mr. G. E. Jago, of Stratford, was last night appointed secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Union.
Mr. Herbert Speight, of Norse wood, has been appointed headmaster of the Port Ahuriri school.
Mr. G. W. Rodgers, of Opunake, was operated upon recently in a New Plymouth private hospital, and is now making good progress towards recovery. • The Rev. D. D. Roger, who has served in virions churches in Christchurch for 36 years, and has for twelve years been in charge of the Papanui Presbyterian Church, is retiring from active work in the ministry. Mr. A. Eyre, son of Mr. Eyre, Collector of Customs at New Plymouth, arrived in New Plymouth by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. Eyre was a member of the crew of the barque Antiope, which was burned at Delagoa Bay on January 13.
Mr. C. D. Chant, of Frankley Road, left by the Rarawa on Tuesday night for Auckland, en route to Sydney and England. He expects to be away about nine to twelve months, and will visit Scotland and France.
A Sydney cablegram states that disconcerting private reports have been received regarding the health of she Premier, Mr. Storey, who is now in England. It is stated that he has been strongly urged by English doctors to abandon public life altogether, so as to obviate the necessary mental strain. Constable P. Duddy, who has been in charge of the Normanby police district for the past five years, has been trans 1 ferred to Rawene, Hokianga. The residents met on Monday evening, and presented his wife with a silver spirit kettle, many present voicing their appreciation of the constable’s services to the district, especially during the influenza epidemic. A striking tribute to the ability of the late Mr. W. 1). Powdrell, M.P., was paid by the Premier (Mr. Massey) in addressing Thursday night’s meeting at Hawera. “Taranaki was his world,” eaid Mr. Massey in apbaking of the. late member far Patea and his devotion to duty. “Ke possessed an extraordinary knowledge of farming matters, and especially of dairy farming, and was a useful man in the House for this reason.” The Premier expressed deep regret at the loss of so valuable a member.
