Present: Messrs. J. B. Richards (chairman), W. P. Kirkwood, J. W McMillan, S. Macalister, C. Martin, W. McDonald, W. Mclnnes, Thompson D. J. Malone. The chairman welcomed Messrs. McMillan and Mclnnes new members of the executive. With reference to the question of a slot telephone which had been promised by tile Postal Department- some months previously, the chairman stated that the delay seemed to be quite unreasonable, particularly as towns much smaller than Stratford already had slot telephones. It was decided to give the department another reminder of Stratford’s need in thie respect. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., wrote stating that while he was in Wellington he would confer with Mr. Campbell, Government architect, with a view to hastening the erection of the new post office. Mr. Macalister stated that Mr. Masters had informed, him that he had had no success in the master. It was decided to again write to Mr. Masters asking if he had anything new to convey to the chamber in regard to the matter.

Mr. Macalister remarked, in connection with the proposed railway station alterations at Stratford, that the delay of the department was causing inconvenience to people owning land in the locality who rfid not/know whether to build or not. It was decided to write to the General Manager of Railways drawing his attention to this matter and intimating that the land (iould probably be purchased cheaper now than it could later on.

Lengthy correspondence was received from the Welfare League in connection with the waterfront trouble, the league asking that the chamber give its support to a proposal that the system in operation in Sydney be adopted in New Zealand. After discussion a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of some action being taken with a view to placing the employment of labor on the waterfront on a ijiore satisfactory basis than at present.

On the motion of Mr. Thomson it was resolved that the Minister of Railways be written to asking him to re-instate foot warmers, or preferably to instal a proper heating system, on the Welling-ton-New Plymouth mail tains. The chairman referred to the fine stretch of native bush in the Tangarakau Gorge, which he stated should be set aside as a scenic reserve if that had i not already been done. He remarked j that several years ago the chamber had i endeavored io ascertain if the land had j been set aside as a i-cenic reserve but i no finality was then reached. —It* was decided to make inquiries as to whether the land was already a scenic reserve. The need for the institution of a telephone between Tahora and Tatu was discussed and it was decided to write to the Postmaster-General pointing out the urgent necessity for the telephone. THE HALF-HfeLIDAY". At the meeting of the executive of the Chamber of Commerce last night the secretary reported on the action he had taken Jn connection, with the proposal that the present Saturday timetable on the Whangamomona branch line be also run on Fridays, in order to suit the convenience of the country people in view of the Saturday half-holiday in Stratford. He stated that in addition to writing to the traffic manager, he had interviewed the stationmaster, who was favorable to the proposal, and had sent a very favorable report to the district office on the matter. The traffic manager had replied stating that the matter had been le’ferred to the head office, but no further communication had been received to date. Mr. J. W. McMillan said the stationmaster had approached him and asked, if in the_event of Thursday being adopted again, when the change would be made. He had replied that he did nf>t think Stratford would go back to Thursday, but •if that day was carried at the poll the change would not take place until June 1. Ttye stationmaster stated that the department was wondering if it was worth while making the alteration if the half-holiday might be changed again. He personally thought the alteration of the train service would have an effect on the voting at. the poll. The chairman. (Mr. J. B. Richards) said the matter was important in order to make it more convenient for the country people coming into town on Fridays. It was decided to send a telegram to the traffic manager asking if it was possible to expedite .the matter. ' z GARDEN FETE AT VICARAGE.
