THE TEVIOT RUNS.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS RESTRICT APPLICATIONS. Dunedin, March 31. A special meeting of the Otago Land Board was held to-day for the purpose of examining’ applicants for a number of the Teviot runs and conducting a ballot. The runs attracted very little attention, and there was only a moderate response -from applicants. The reason for this appears to be that special conditions laid it down that a successful applicant could not obtain possession of his holding until April •! of next year, and the men complained, with apparent justice, that if they were only given possession to fence, cultivate, and erect buildings and were not allowed to put stock on the land, they could not obtain a return, and as stock is low in price at the present time they would be compensated to some extent for their outlay as against having no return at all. In view of these facts the Land Board unanimously adopted the following resolution: “That in the opinion of the board a mistake has been made in not allowing applicants for the Teviot runs to get immediate possession, and the board strongly recommends that the special conditions be amended so that applicants can be given immediate possession and allowed to start at once.”
