THE WELFARE LEAGUE

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of March 30 appears a contribution from the Welfare League, headed ‘‘The New Unionism, which I take to be typical of that body’s propaganda, or, at any rate, not much worse than their average. I have amused myself by analysing the contents, and now offer the results. In the course of three-quarters of a column, the Labor Party is subjected to the following 31 epithets and exaggerations: —“Anarchie,’ “anarchism,” “anarchy,” “snake of anarchism,” 9 items each; “lie,” twice; “masquerading,” twice. Then the following appear once each: —“Euphemistically,” “treacherous,” “insidiously treacherous,’ - “dangerous,” “brazenly,” “socially criminal/’ “octopus,” “class despotism,” “meatiness,” “dishonour,” “effrontery,” “organised conspiracy,” “rob,” destroy,” “vicious wills,” “scheming syndicalists,” “stab community in the back,” “organised incarnation of utter selfishness.” This lot, applied to a party counting well over 100,000 voters, strikes me as in excess of the probable fact. As a candid friend of the Welfare League, I recommend that the gentleman responsible for this style of argument be sacked, and replaced with a man who can keep sober, and supply propaganda worthy of perusal.-—I am, etc., H. W. BAXTER. Effinoat Village, .April 1 4 1921.
