STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication in the Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left wit) them. Stratford, April 1. At a meeting of friends and wellwishers of Dr. D. Steven, held in the municipal chambers last night, it was decided to tender a complimentary social to the doctor prior to his departure on furlough for a tour round the world. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillen) presided and there were also present: Mr. R. Masters, M.P., Councillors C. B. Walsh, T. Lawson, S. B. Hunter an< W. H. H. Young, Messrs. V. Smith, S. A. Ward, D. J. Malone, A. Manoy, J. Petrie, C. R. Finnerty, P. Thomson, H. E. Lawrence, L. T. Alyward, G. P. Harkness and J. McAllister (hon sec). It was resolved that a conversazione be held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, and that a suitable presentation be made to Dr. Steven at the function. A number of sub-committees were set up and it was decided to call a meeting of ladies to be held in the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon. Dr. Steven will leave Stratford on April 12 for Wellington, from which place he will depart on the Ruapehu on April 14. Mrs. Steven will join her husband a few months later. Mr. T. H. Penn (official observer) reports that rain fell on 14 days in Stratford during the month of March, the total fall amounting to only 4.14) inches. The heaviest fall was on Easter Saturday, when 1.54 inches fell, there being no other particularly wet days. From the 13th to the 29th inclusive, rain fell on every day, although some of the falls were very slight. Apart from this period the only wet days were the Sth and 7th.

Only three building permits were issued by the Borough Council during the past month, the total value being £3425. Two of the permits were for alterations and one for a small cottage. Mr. R. Adlam, one of the most popular teachers in the Stratford School, has left the school from to-day, in consequence of the new regulations of the Education Department, and will take up tbe same grade duties at the Central School, New Plymouth. At the school this morning a presentation was made to Mr. Adlam as a token of the esteem in which he is held, and general regret was expressed at his enforced departure. The headmaster (Mr. Tyrer) said that Mr. Adlam did not Want to leave the school and the staff and pupils did not want to lose him, but owing to the regulations the change was necessary. He also referred to Mr. Adlam’s splendid war services in Samoa and France and to the excellent work he had done while on the staff of the Stratford School. Mr. Adlam was one of the most promising among .-the young teachers in the Taranaki Education District, and on behalf of the teachers and children he (Mr. Tyrer) wished him every success in the future, at the same time presenting him with a smoker’s companion as an expression of their regard for him. Mr. Adlam suitably replied, after which the gathering sang ‘‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” concluding with cheers. If is understood that a commencement will be made with the work of removing one of the buildings now standing on the Broadway leases next week, in order to make way for the erection of a new building. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., has decided to deliver a political address to the electors of Stratford at the Town Hall, Stratford, on Wednesday, April 6, at 8 p.m., when political problems of the day will be fully dealt with. The committee of the Toko School are inviting future, present and past pupils and parents and friends to an afternoon on Friday. April 8, at 2 p.m. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., will, be present. A meeting of ladies will be held in the Borough Council chambers tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3.30 o’clock, in connection with the conversazione to Dr. and Mrs. Steven.

Mr. F. Cook, pork butcher, Broadway, Stratford, notifies the public of a reduction on small goods of 2d per lb all round.

Aa a public pleasure resort, the delightful Ngaere Gardens, have increased in favor to a wonderful extent during the present season, and the proprietors intend to continue the attractions during the fine weather and possibly throughout the winter months. Today the pupils of the Rowan School held their annual picnic at the gardens, and the scholars from St. Cuthbert’s Sunday School. Manaia, will ateo be holding their picnic at Ngaere shortly. On Sunday, April 17, the Opunake Federal Band, will make its appearance at the gardens and patrons can be assured of an excellent programme. During the Easter holidays, the attendance was very satisfactory in view of the unpleasant weather conditions, there being an attendance of 600 on Good Friday and 1800 on Easter Monday. The programme on Good Friday was a particularly attractive one, the items being contributed by Mesdames C. Massey and S. Robinson, Miss Rona Kino. Messrs. P. Coe and A. D. Bills and Rogers’ orchestra. The accompaniments were played by Miss E. Moon.
