A meeting of the Stratford Saturday Half-Holiday Association wa£ held in. the Borough Council Chambers last night, the president, Mr. W. McDonald occupying the chair. Correspondence was received, from Eltham regarding the movement there, the Saturday Association reporting that the action of the Eltham retailers in advertising- in the Stratford paper, and also their action in keeping the shops open on Easter Saturday, bad strengthened the feeling in favor of the Saturday half-holiday, which the association believed would be carried easily. An invitation was extended to the Stratford Association to attend a meeting of Saturday supporters at Eltham, and it was decided that the whole committee attend the meeting. Several^ speakers pointed out that the opposition was blaming the Saturday half-holiday for the difference in their takings, as compared with the previous month, instead of attributing the difference to the general financial depression. In spite of the slump two members reported that their cash takings were in excess of what they were for March last’ year, one speaker quoting figures to show that his takings were 20 per cent in excess of what they were last March. Complaint was made by one member that considerable apathy was being displayed by the Saturday supporters, in marked contrast to the energetic manner in which the. Thursday Association was working. During the discussion which followed it was pointed out that a deal of quiet canvassing’Rvas being done in favor of Saturday, but many of their supporters, particularly those employed in shops, were afraid to “show their hands,” because their employers favored Thursday. It was contended that although the Saturday' Association was making very little noise, their supporters were being consolidated and a big campaign would be launched later

A committee was appointed to interview the officials of the local sports bodies, soliciting their financial and moral support. It was also resolved to enter upon a publicity campaign with the object of educating the electors on the advantages of the Saturday halfholiday, special stress to be laid on the experience of other towns in this connection. • A ladies’ committee is to be appointed to assist the association in retaining the half-holiday. The Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan), who was present, was congratulated on the stand he had taken in endeavoring to secure a provincial Saturday half-holi-day, a resolution to this effect being carried unanimously. It was decided to hold ?. meeting of 411 supporters of the Saturday halfholiday in the council chambers on Wednesday evening next. BURGLARY AT TAHGRA. The Stratford office' of the Public Works Department has been advised that the goods shed at the Tahora railway station was broken into on Tuesday evening and a quantity of goods beto settlers in the district was stolen. The matter was communicated to the police and the Whangamomona constable has been sent out to make investigations, but no report has yet been received from him. -• GENERAL. The following vital statistics for ihe Stratford district, have been supplied by the registrar, Mr. S. H. James, the figures for the corresponding peribds last year being given in parenthesis:— : Month of March —Births 19 (24), deaths 7 (3), marriages 8 (4). Quarter ended March 31.—Births 55 (67), deaths 19 (11), marriages 15 (12). A very interesting collection of group photographs of past Mayors and councillors is displayed in the council room of the municipal buildings, and as it is proposed to keep this collection complete, a special photograph of the present council is being prepared by Mr. J. R. Wall. The photograph should be all the more interesting in view of the fact that several of the councillors do not contemplate offering themselves for reelection for another term.

The final of the Stratford Bowling Club’s Easter pairs tournament, between Lyons and Finlay and Porritt and Boyd, will be played off on Saturday next.
