A huge crowd lined the banks of the Thames. The conditions were ideal for the boat race with scarcely a ripple on the water. Oxford, winning the toss, chose the Surrey side and started at 34 strokes to the minute against Cambridge’s 36. At Beverley Brook, Cambridge led by half a length, which they increased to a length at Fulham football ground. At the .Crabtree, Cambridge had a length and a quarter advantage, but at Hammersmith Bridge the crews were dead level, Oxford doing 36 strokes and Cambridge 35. When half the course had been covered Oxford led by a third of a length, which was increased to a length in rounding the bend, where Oxford was rowing 31 and Cambridge 29. At Barnes Bridge Oxford still had a slight advantage. but Cambridge, rowing strongly, drew level at the White Hart. Cambridge were ahead at Mortlake Brewery and won by a length after a remarkably gruelling race. Time, 19min. 44see. The Prince of Wales and Duke of York Were present.
