ATHLETICS.

EGMONI .VILLAGE SPORTSf A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Egmont Village sports, which were held at the local schdftl grounds yesterday, proved a most successful and enjoyable function. The weather was perfect, and there was a large attendance from Egmont Village and surrounding districts. Keen interest was taken in the varied sports programme, there being large entries in all events and very close finishes, a tribute to the work of the handicapper (Mr. R. O’Byrne). Unfortunately the events were not run off to time, with the result that it was nearly dark before the last event was contested. The officials, comprising Messrs. H. Heak (starter), H. Sinclair, A. Chard and R. F. Price (judges), all carried out their duties splendidly, whilst the committee, headed by Mr. H. W. Baxter as chairman, left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the gathering. Mr. V. Hurlstone, as secretary, had complete arrangements made. ’ A feature of the afternoon was the dainty afternoon tea controlled by a committee of ladies, who must be Congratulated on the results achieved. The children had a happy time, numerous races being arranged for their benefit by Messrs. I. Longs taff, H- Olson and J. McGee.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. 4 The Riverlea sports were held in Mr. Malone’s grounds in splendid weather yesterday. There was a large attendance. The committee worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering, and special credit is due to the secretary (Mr. A. E. Sadler). The Eltham Band was present and provided excellent music. AH the appointments were in good order, and the entries for all events were excellent. The hurdling and jumping events for horses proved a great attraction. and included some of the best jumpers in South Taranaki. Results:— Maiden Race, 120 yards.—D. Foster 1, A. Frethey 2, C.
