BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CAMPAIGN. WEST END REPRESENTATIVES. The question of selecting candidates to contest the municipal elections next month was discussed at a meeting of St. Aubyn and Moturoa ratepayers in the West End School gymnasium last night. There was an attendance of about twenty, and Mr. J. S. S. Medley was voted to the chair. In inviting the meeting to put forward the names of likely candidates, the chairman pointed out that the representatives of the western end of the town in the present council, namely Crs. Sykes and Hill, would not be seeking reelection. In view of the fact that a number of other sitting councillors would be definitely retiring from office a selection of new men would have to be made generally. Mr. R. A. Large, who convened the meeting,'explained that he thought the district was too important a part of the town to be left unrepresented. As illustrating the growth of the West End he estimated that during the last twelve months at least 100 new houses had been erected in the area between Dawson Street and Spotswood. In reply to a question, Mr. Large said he had been asked to become a candidate but would not consent to nomination unless it was the wish of the ratepayers in the district.

The meeting decided to nominate Mr. Large as a candidate, and also to approach Messrs. S. Lush and Joseph Brown with a view to securing their consent to nomination, and to place all the names before a meeting of delegates from all the ratepayers’ associations, which is to be held to-morrow night. In regard to the other issues to be put before ratepayers. Mr. Large said he thought all would be in favor of approving the proposal to pay 6 per cent interest to raise money for the hydroelectric works. It was an important undertaking and the extra rate of interest would have to be paid in order ‘.o get the money.
