WAIMATE PLAINS TROTS. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. MT. ALBERT WINS THE CUP. The weather was fine but cold yesterday for the Waimate Plains .Trotting Club’s meeting, which was held on the Hawera racecourse. The meeting attracted a very large attendance, the gate takings being over £7O more than last year. The course was in splendid order, the rain only being sufficient to take the sting out of the ground. Racing throughout was of a very interesting nature, the fields, with one or two exceptions, being large, whilst the finishes were generally exciting. Mr. A. Morse made his debut as a starter of trotters with distinct success, getting the fields atfay well, whilst Mr. R P Morrissey in the judge’s box hoisted his decisions promptly.

The Cup was a good race, being won by the Auckland owned horse Mt. Albert, whose owner and driver Abbott) received hearty congratulations when the Cup donated by Mr. J. R. Corrigan was presented to Mrs. Abbott by the president (Mr. B. McCarthy).

The totalisator staff, under Mr. Moore, had a busy time, handling £22,925, compared with £27,183 last year, a decrease of £4258. This decrease was contributed to by the lack of speculation in the Futurity *Stakes. Mr. W. A. Pyne was the Government official. Everything passed off without a hitch, Mr. A. G. Mabee, the stipendiary steward, who also acted as re-handicap-per, finding no cause for complaint. The officials all did their work well, the races being got off well up to time. The afternoon tea arrangements were ably controlled by Mrs. Duggan, and the refreshment booth was in charge of Mr. E. Whittle. Mr. V. B. Stratton, the secretary, had complete arrangements made and he was assisted by a capable staff. The Hawera Citizens’ Band, under Conductor Gould, gave a fine programme of music. The bracketed pair, Rockaway and Franzie Queen were made favorite, and with Te Ataihaea .and Azelzion carried the bulk of the money. Stanley Dillon was quickest to settle-down, and led from Rockaway, who, trotting nicely, took command and led past the stand the first time from Stanley Dillon. This pair maintained the lead .until half a mile from tome, when Azelzion moc#»d up, and running on well led into the straight from Stanley Dillon, who had again displaced Rockaway. Azelzion, going on, won comfortably by about two lengths from Maydorn, who came very fast over tho last bit (hjd beat Stanley Dillon, for second money by half a length. Grace Direct was fourth. These were the only defections, a field of nine facing the starter. Of these Tauhinu was made a hot order, Red Star being next in demand. Jimmy Richmond caused a little trouble at the barrier, and when the field was despatched was facing the other way. Overrate also refused to settle down and took little part in the race. Mt. Albert was quickest to settle down and led in the early stages from Tauhinu. With half the journey completed William the First went to the front, but broke and Mt, Albert again assumed command and was never headed, leading into the straight from Tauhinu. In the run home Red Star put !ji a claim, and headed .Tauhinu, but could not overhaul the leader, who gained the verdict by a good length, with Tauhinu two lengths away third and Warlock close up fourth. Aranui led for the first half mile, when Rio Grande went to the front and soon established a lead of four or five lengths, which be maintained to within half a mile from home, when King Capitalist, trotting in fine style, gradually overhauled Aranui and got to within striking distance of the leader at the straight entrance.
