JERSEY BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION.

HAWERA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Hawera Jersey Breeders’ Association was held on Thursday, when there were present:—Messrs. R. J. Linn (chair), F. Hoskin, H. H. Buxton, A. H. Guy, J. Pettigrew, S. J. Bennett, H, Hodge, and C. R. Stannard (secretary). C.O.R. STAKES. The secretary reported that entries for the C.O.R. Stakes were originally fixed to close on February 12. The entries were so satisfactory the committee decided that it would be desirable to extend the date to March I’2 (the Saturday after the New Plymouth Show) to see if the total would not reach 30G. The list came close to this figure, the final closing with 286 entries. Entries came from all oyer New Zealand, all the principal and well-known breeders being represented. With the exception of six all were paid for, and the meeting considered the results most satisfactory. DEMONSTRATION. It was announced that Mr. H. E. B. Watson would give a demonstration on Wednesday, April 6, commencing at 10.30 a.m. The president, Mr. Buxton, and the secretary were appointed a special committee to organise the function. OFFICIAL LIST OF JUDGES. The secretary reported that the official list of judges issued by the Agricultural Department recently, did not contain any list of Jersey judges. The list was compiled on recommendations received from A. and P. associations and breed societies, and it seemed a serious omission that the Jersey section' should be absent. If the Jersey Breeders’ Association had its official list it should be incorporated, as an inset in the Departmental publication. It wa» resolved that the Jersey Breeders’ Association be requested to forward an official list of judges to this branch. CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter was read from Mr. J. K. Richards, Kapuni, dated March 7, mentioning that his cow, Gambage’s Wonder, had just dropped a heifer calf, and asking was it eligible for entry in the £5OO stakes, closing on the 12th. He understood that jt was for calves born between July 1 and December 31, but) owing to this cow being under C.O.R. test for the last two calves she was out of season now. Her present calf ranked in age from July 1. Could she be entered b> March 12. He thought the rules should be a little more elastic to meet cases of this sort. The secretary replied that the rules provided for entry of all registered Jerseys calved between July 31 and December 31. Under the conditions it was regretted that the entry could not be accepted. (BRANDING OF CALVES. Mr. Bennett brought up the matter of branding of calves. He heard of a case of a man buying a line of pedigree calves from a neighbor and then putting his own brand on. Also there was a considerable amount of carelessness in this respect and if they took notice at shows they would see even 3-year-olds without a brand, some breeders contending that the brand on a calf became unsightly at 3 years old. Mr. Hoskin suggested that the association register a brand of its own and brand with it all calves entered for the C.O.R. Stakes. This would tend to check any tendency of dishonesty. It was suggested that all cases of omission to brand calves should be immediately reported to the society. Both purchaser and seller of purebred stock were liable to see that this whs done. After an informal discussion it was resolved that no action be taken in the meantime in regard to the society registering its own brand.—Star.
