DISTRICT NEWS.

MATAU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A general meeting of the Matau Ratepayers’ and Settlers’ Association was held at Matau recently to consider the reply received from the Stratford County Council with reference to the petition from the residents, for the Matau district to be, absorbed into the Stratford County. A committee from tte 'Stratford County Council visited the district and inspected all roadst and bridges,, and in spite of the fact that no fault was found with roads or bridges, the council refused to consider the petition, and what is more, did not give any reason for their refusal. A letter was received from the Clifton Council with reference to re-adjustment of the' county boundaries, and it was decided to support the council in action under consideration. A meeting of the Matau-Tangitu Sports Committee held recently, and it was decided that the annual sports meeting be held on Thursday, April 14, in Mr. S. J. Kennington’s paddock. The following ofpeials were elected: Patron, Mr. R. Masters, M,P.; president, Mr. W. A. Hewitt; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. "Larsen, S. J. Kennington, T. V. Simons, H. R. Harrison, N. Fletcher, C. Larsen, T. F. Hayes; protest committee, Messrs. T. Henry, H. Gallagher and S. J. Kenning- : ton; handicappers, chopping, E. Evans and S. J. Holley ;_foot races, C. McMillan and E. Evans; judges, C. McMillan and H. Larsen; starter, C. E. Putt; chainman of committee, Mr. S. D. Holley; joint secs, and treasurers, Messrs. C. H. Larsen and W. McCoard. An excellent programme with good prizes has been drawn up, and given good weather a very enjoyable day should be spent.

Mr. F. Fee, a returned soldier, has taken up h.’s duties as headmaster of the Mata/i School, in succession to Mr. C. H. Short. RAHOTU. (From Our Own Corespondent.) The Methodist Church held their harvest thanksgiving services last Sunday week. A good number attended both services, Mr. Wright taking the morning and Mr. Strand the evening service. The sale took place the following Tuesday, when good business was done. Bidding was very brisk, and about £2O (net) was taken. Mr. K. Andrews acted as auctioneer very creditably. Mrs. and Miss Dawson are in the Waikato visiting relations. Mr. and Mrs. Bell and Mrs. A. Raynor have gone to the South Island for a trip. The Misses Hughson are expected back any day. A party of ten from Rahotu and Opunake tope to spend Easter up at the local mountain house. A farewell is to be tendered to Mrs. and Mr. W. Harrison on the 30th. Mrs. Harrison having been tteacher at the school for the last four years, both will be very much missed from our midst. What is Rahotu's loss . is Tariki’s gain. A contest between the White and Leyland motor lorries took place last Wednesday afternoon, causing a good deal of excitement. One White had the unisfortune to break down on the way, but the others reached their destination in 2 hours and 23 minutes with a load of five ton of cheese on board. Mr. Fred Chapman, eldest son of Mr. A. Chapman, is Lri a private hospital In New Plymouth with a poisoned finger, which we are sorry to hear has had to b© amputated. As a little child he lost the first finger, on the other hand. Tt e new roller is now .on _ the bowling green, so the ground should soon be in better order.
