Mr. A. N. Bachelor, of Nelson, is at present in New Plymouth. He is staying with Captain Waller (harbormaster).
The death occurred at Palmerston North on Thursday of Mr. Samuel Law, at the age of 06 years. He had been resident at Palmerston since 1903.
Sir Joseph and Lady Ward have arranged to leave London shortly for a prolonged tour of the Continent (writes a London correspondent under date of February 10).
His Excellency the Governor-General, Lady Jellicoe, and family leave Wellington on April 1 on a twelve days’ tour of Nelson and West Coast districts.
Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Waitomo, intends to leave for England in about a month’s time. While away, he will visit the graves of his two sons who were killed at the front. Kir. E. A. Cheat, assistant tramway engineer, who was injured at the Wanganui power-house some time ago, is making slow progress towards recovery’, but is still unable to walk except witji crutches.
The Clutha Free Press records the death of Mr. Archibald Hutton, at the age of seventy-seven years. Deceased was a baker at Anderson Bay for some years, and went tol Baldutha twenty-four years On Saturday the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massey) celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday. Mr. Massey was born in Londonderry, and came to New Zealand -when a youth of 1 J years to join his parents. He arrived in New Zealand by the City 7 of Auckland over 50 years ago. The many friends of Mr. Percy 7 Young, of New Plymouth, will regret to hear of his death, which occurred at Auckland on Thursday last after a very short illness. ,Re leaves a widow (a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Oldfield) and a son and daughter; also three sisters—Mrs. Esdale (Auckland), and Misses .K. and E. Young (New Plymouth) .
Sir Dighton Probyn, V.C., Comptroller to Queen Alexandra, celebrated his eighty-eighth birthday on January 21. This veteran is the oldest V.C. winner alive to-day, and a few months ago, when the King and Queen gave a garden fete in honor of the “bravest of the brave” he was at the head of the procession to Buckingham Palace.
