Montagu (Secretary for Indila), replying to a deputation of Lancashire M.P.’s. who protested against the Indian Budget’s increased duties on cotton goods, admitted that he was legally empowered to veto the increases, but nothing would more endanger the o-ood relations between India and Britain than the belief that India’s fiscal policy wa dictated from Whitehall. In Britain’s interests India must have fiscal freedom; that was promised her. He hoped she would give the British Empire preference.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. /,
