PATEA BY-ELECTION.
THE LABOR CANDIDATE. (Contributed.) Yesterday two meetings were held in Hawera in furtherance of Mr. L. Mell vride’s candidature for the Pa tea election. During the afternoon a meeting of railwaymen was addressed by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., and Mr. L. Mcllvride. There was a large number present and the speakers were accorded a good reception. Last night a crowded meeting was held in the Grand Theatre, Hawera. Mr. P O’Dea occupying the chair. Mr. Fraser spoke on the subject of the “Crucifixion of Ireland.” At the conclusion of the meeting the following resolution, moved by Mr. Howell and seconded by Mr. Henderson, was carried..—“ This meeting of Hawera citizens considers Ireland’s claim for selfgovernment is a just one; condemns the reign of terror and suppression being carried on by the British Government; demands that the troops be immediately withdrawn and that self-government be granted forthwith. It congratulates the New Zealand Labor Party on the stand it has taken for Irish freedom, both inside and outside of 1 Parliament, and recognises it as the only political party in the Dominion which is ready to fight for democracy. It further agrees that copies of this resolution be sent to the Prime Minister, Mr. Holland (chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Party), Mr. Llovd George and Mr. Clynes header of the Britilh Labor Party!?’
