FITZROY SCHOOL.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING. The annual prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Fitzroy School, which was postponed from last December, on account of the measles epidemic, took place on Thursday afternoon in the school gymnasium in the presence of a large attendance of parents and friends. An apology Ipr absence was received from Mr. P. J. H. White (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board). The Rev. J. F. Martin (chairman of the Fitzroy School Committee) presided, and Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P., and R. J. Deare (members of the Education Board) were present. s The chairman, after addressing a few appropriate remarks tlo the children, referred to the loss <he committee had eufitaine'd during the year by the death of their secretary, Mr. L. Chivers, and he paid a high tribute to his careful and painstaking efforts on behalf of the school. The chairman then mentioned the various improvements recently made to the school, including the extension of the asphalt in the playground. Other works contemplated were the extension of the school grounds, the laying down of a tennis court, the building of a concrete fence in front of the school, and lastly, the erection of a new school in brick. He concluded by paying a high tribute to the teaching staff, who, he said, were anxious to lay a good educational foundation in the boys and girls. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., jocularly referred to the Fitzroy School Committed as “the greatest pesterers'” the Education Board had to deal with. He assured the committee that, in the matter of bringing about improvements, the stumbling block was the departmental officers in Wellington, not the Education Board. Messrs. R J. Deare, and Roy Parkin also spoke. Mr. O. Johnson (headmaster) thanked his staff for their work during the year. He mentioned that out of 12 candidates presented for proficiency, 11 passed. He also dealt with the matters of obtaining a school uniform, the institution of tooth-brush drill, and the collection of money on behalf of the Barnardo Homes.
