OMATA’S MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor.) IsJlr, —Conversing witli two or three old identities a few days ago, conversation turned on .happenings in the past. One old fellow, in a reminiscent mood, recalled the fact that shortly after the close of the Great War, which occurred in the early part of the present century, a considerable amount of money was collected in this district for the purpose of erecting a suitable memorial to perpetuate the memory of the men who went from here to fight for Zealandla, and beauty, and other things. According to my informant at least £wo separate committees were formed in the district to further this

worthy object. After considerably skirmishing between these two factions an Agreement was arrived at, the conditions of Which, like a more recent agreement, were not divulged to the public. Apparently, tired out by their exertions the committee or committees imitated Rip Van Winkle and fell asleep. So far nothing further seems to have been done in the matter. As there are still a few left who are interested, might I presume to tip these gentlemen a nudge and awaken them to their responsibilities. If in awakening ocular proof is needed to show them that much time has been wasted, a motor ride through neighbouring districts to see the various fine memorial stones and honor boards erected there will convince-*‘them of the fact. A notice from the proper quarter calling a public meeting will be regarded by the few as a graceful act. —I am, etc., . . "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER."
