Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Mr. W. M. Hughes, Premier of vAustralia, has definitely informed the Federal Cabinet that he is visiting London in June. Mr. C. H. Stephenson, of New Plythat he has e c * nd at the forthcoming poll. Mr. Stanley Shaw has received advice that his son, Mr. J. H. Shaw, who has been studying medicine at the Melbourne University, was successful in the recent examinations in attaining his final medical professional degree with honors.
There will be a feeling of general regret on the Coast, says the Chronicle, at the announcement that Mr. T. W. Lonsdale has resigned his position of manager of the Government Experimental Farm at Moumahaki. Mr. Lonsdale expects to go to the North Auckland district in June, wKere he will join his son, who is farming there. Mr. William Maitland Ellis, of Auckland, a colonist of nearly 80 years’ standing, dies on Sunday evening last. The late Mr. Ellis arrived at Auckland with his parents in the troopship Mary Ann Watson on April 10, 1842. He saw considerable service in the Maori War. Mr. Ellis - had not been well for some tyine, but his end came rather suddenly. The deceased is survived by his- wife and grown-up family of three sons and three daughters, while two other sons lost their lives in the war. The Chronicile announces the death of an old and highly-esteemed resident of Wanganui in the person of Mrs. Joseph Wallace, who passed away at her residence on Sunday evening. The deceased lady, who was G 7 years of age, was the second daughter of the late Mr. Oliver Spurdie, of Waitara. She was born in New Plymouth. In 1873 she was married at Trinity Church, Wanganui, this being the first, wedding celebrated in the church. The deceased lady, was of a kindly disposition and much loved by all who knew her. She leaves
a husband and grown-up family of five sons to mourn her loss; also thirtyseven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
