TIMARU WOOL SALES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, March 21. At the wool sales to-daj' nearly 12,000 bales were catalogued, but a large number of clips were withdrawn before the sale, and a very small percentage was sold. Merino, super, brought 9%d to 10%d, good 8d to 9 J 4d, super half-bred up to 9%d, good to 6d. medium to good threequarter bred 4%d to 5Hd, medium 3%d to 4%d, crossbred, good 3d to medium 2»4 to 2%d. There was a largo quantity of scoured, but there were practically no bids, and no sale was made. A large number of lots brought bids of only l%d to 2 J 4d, and locks and pieces as low as a half-penny. LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONERS CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture kas received the following cablegram, dated' March 19, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — "Meat.—Market conditions have not changed materially, and position still dominated by large supplies frozen beef, resulting in lower prices, except for very best quality. Home killed average prices are:—Beef, Is, 4%d; mutton. Is B%d; lamb, 2s per lb. Beef, Argentine chilled, selling up to maximum prim; Argentine ox. lOd and 7d per lb; New Zealand ox, 8d and 6d per lb, hinds and fores respectively. Lower price being accepted for lower quality. Heavy-weight Government mutton, no demand, but free New Zealand light-Wjeight mutton and lamb In good demand at maximum price. New Zealand lamb from America in good demand at maximum price for first-class quality, and Is (P/fcd per lb for second-class quality. "Butter.—Market® Irregular owing to removal of control at March 31. Final distribution of Government butter is being made under present scheme at £l4 18s 8d per cwt. wholesale, and 3s per lb. retail. English average price is £lB 4s per cwt. (3s 3d per lb) ; Irish, scarce at £l4 10s to £l5 per cwt. (2s 7d to 2s 8d per lb) ; but some new creamery, as much as £l6 16s per cwt. (3s per lb). "Cheese.—Market quiet, and all prices easier. English, £8 8s to £9 per cwt. (Is Gd to Is 7d per lb) ; Canadian, £7 10s to £7 16s per cwt. (Is 4d to Is 4%d per lb) ; white, £8 to £8 2s per cwt. (approximately Is 5d per lb) ; colored. New Zealand, £7 2s to £7 6s per cwt. (Is 3d to Is 3%d per lb) : wlnte, £7 18s to £8 2s per cwt. (Is 4%d to Is 5d per lb) ; colored, Australian, £7 to £7 4s per cwt. (Is 3d to Is 3%d per lb) , white, £7 14s to £7 18s per cwt. (Is 4%d to Is 4%d per lb) colored. "Casein.—Market continues dull and lifeless. Large arrivals from South America are being offered at low prices, but there are no buyers, although there are slight signs of improvement. Trice of best fresh easier, and shipment being held back in consequence. "Hemp.—Manila market quiet and steady. "J” grade January-March shipment sold £3B per ton, now quoted at same price buyers. March-May shipment sold £37 per ton. New Zealand market quiet and unchanged. Quotations nominal, spot, highpolnts, £^s; fair, £43 per ton; Marek-May shipment, £42 and £4O per ton respectively. "Honey.—Market very quiet, and remains unchanged. "Wool.—Bradford outlook not improved. Little business doing, and financial position causing anxiety.
