RECORD IN CABLES.
LONDON-SYDNEY IN 15 MINUTES. EXTENSION OF FACILITIES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. « Received March 22, 5.5 p.m. London, March 21. Mr. Avery, superintendent of Imperial cables, lecturing before the Postal and Telegraph Society, eulogised the Pacific service, which was increasing to such a degree that it was necessary to duplicate a considerable section, especially from Bamfield to Fanning Island, which hampered speedy transmission. Notwithstanding this excellent results had been achieved. Last summer’s twenty minuUbs record for a cable from the King to the Prince of Wales giving the result of the Derby was surpassed during the cricket tour, when scores were received at the London head office from the Sydney ground within fifteen minutes. The Imperial service embraced two Atlantic cables, one of which was leased to the Western Union Company subject to resumption when required. Imperial business was increasing as a result of canvassing for customers. Mr. Avery was of opinion that the foundations* of a State-owned cable service were secureljr laid.—Aus.-N.Z- Cable Assn.
