THE PATEA SEAT.

MR. E. DIXON’S CAMPAIGN A very enthusiastic meeting of Mr# E. Dixon’s lady friends and supporters' was held at Hawera yesterday afternoon. Mr. Dixon, who was received with applause, addressed the meeting, briefly setting out the aims, objects and work jrf the Government. At the conclusion of Mr. Dixon’s address various committees were set up to further his interests. MR. PEARCE’S POSITION. Mr. G. V. Pearce, ex-M.P., writes to the Patea Press:—l notice by the papers that I was nominated at the recent meeting of supporter/ of the Reform Party as a candidate at the present by-election, I would like to point out in regard to this that I had been approached by a large number of supporters urging me to offer myself for election. 1, however, declined unless a strong requisition were forthcoming from the electors of the district, as I had made other arrangements for the next few months and had not taken any steps to further my candidature, and had not even been in Hawera for a week before last Friday's meeting. In view of the present serious financial position of the Dominion, had I received a strong requisition I would have considered it my duty to offer my services to the electors, having had more than a mere novice’s experience in politics.
