BAND CONTEST.

WOOLSTON WIN A GRADE. By Telegraph-—Press Association. Nelson, March 19. The finals of the A grade bands were concluded late last evening, the Woolston Brass Band winning by nine points. They received a great ovation. The judge complimented the winners and the next two bands, Invercargill Hibernian and St. Kilda, who tied for second place, on their fine performances. Details:— Woolston, “Semlramide” 144, “Le Prophete” 138; total 282 St. Kilda 136—273 Invercargill Hibernian . . 139, 134—273 Wellington Tramways .. 135, 130—265 Invercargill Garrison . . 131, 122—253 12th Nelson Regiment . 136, 122—248 Auckland City 120, 123—243 Auckland Garrison 120, 119—239 Napier City 118, 116—234 The Boosey trophy for the highest aggregate marks in the A Grade was also won by Woolston. The Boosey trophy for the highest marks in the B grade was won by Ashbuirton Band (Bth South Canterbury Mounted Rifles). The band contest, extending over a week, concluded this afternoon with the quickstep competition in Trafalgar Park in the presence of one of the biggest crowds seen locally. Fine weather prevailed. Mr. Sweney (supervisor) says it was the biggest contest held in the Dominion with the exception of that at the Christchurch exhibition. Quickstep results: Invercargill Hiberniari 280 points Ist.
