THE BUTTER MARKET.
A REPORTED OFFEPv. j \ A telegram received from Wellington la£t night states that a local representative of a leading British house In the provision trade reports receiving a cable that the firm is prepared to make an advance of Is 4d per lb on butter, open consignment. The message was referred by a Daily News reporter to a New Plymouth commercial man in touch with th© butter market, who stated that the announcement could be taken merely as an offer to advance Is 4d per lb for butter, probably f.o.b. As against th£ present price paid by the Imperial Government —namely, 2s fid—this was a comparatively low figure. It is also pointed out that though the market will be free after the 31st instant, butter made from April 1 till July 31 is to be retained by the Government for local consumption.
