STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication in tte Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with them. Stratford, March 18. The breakdown at the Diesel station was repaired early this 'morning, and the light was switched on at 5.30 o’clock. Mr. L. C. Vicary, electrical engineer, states that t'he trouble was caused principally through the timing gear slipping, necessitating a complete overhaul of the engine. The electrical staff worked continuously in overhauling the plant in an endeavor to inconvenience the public as little as possible. The cover of No. 3 cylinder was found to be cracked, and part of the governor had to be, renewed. The Irish national concert and social which was held in the Town Hall last night was a thorough success, in spite of the failure of the electric light. Kerosene lamps were placed on the stage, and the programme was carried through with this illumination. The opening overture was played by the Egmont Club Orchestra, which also provided other items during the evening, all of which were much appreciated. The Convent pupils gave two songs, “A Nation Once Again” and “The Harp That Once”, both items reflecting great credit on the young singers. Mr. P. Coe contributed “Shipmates o’ Mine”, and had to respond with an encore. “The Mountains of Mourne” was sung by Mr. P. Breen, and Mr. T. Breen contributed “The Wearing o’ the Green”. Miss Martin (Pembroke Road) sang “Rose of My Heart”, and Mis® Rona Kirio contributed several songs, including “Love’s Own Kiss”, “Love, |Here is My Heart”, and “Here’s To Love and Laughter”. A dance was held after the concert, the hall being crowded. Mr. P. Coe was M.C., and Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra supplied the music, which made for a most enjoyable evening.

The Government has approved of the appointment of Mr. G. P. Harkness, of Midhirst, as representative of the Stratford County on the Stratford Hospital Board.

Mr. J. B. Richards, president of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, who has been on a visit to Auckland, returned last night. Mr. Richards went to Auckland via the Tangarakau Gorge, and returned via Mt. Messenger. He states that the road over Mt. Messenger is in fairly good order.
