BRITISH RAILWAYS.
RATES AND WAGES PROBLEM. London, Feb. 16. At the annual meeting of the LondonBrighton South Coast Railway Company, the chairman, in support.of his argument that all wages must come down, mentioned the case of boys earning £4 weekly, which was more than thg local clergyman’s salary. He said that the railways weje confronted with the most serious problem since their foundation. The expenses last year increasd 190 per cent, compared with 1913. Increases in rates often resulted in the loss of traffic and revenue, therefore such a remedy was alone inadequate. The Government must continue its guarantee to enable the companies, by the adjustments of rates and fares and the revision of wages and conditions of labor, to work out their own salvation. A telegram from Glasgow says that a meeting of the shareholders of the Sootti. ; ji railway companies, which it is alleged are in danger of bankruptcy, has been called to be held at Glasgow next
