LATE CRICKET.

AUSTRALIA v. SOUTHLAND. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The Australians commenced a twodays’ match against Southland to-day in beautiful weather and before a large attendance. The home team, winning the toss, batted on a good wicket, which if anything was helping the batsmen. Southland made 122. Hornibrook bowled splendidly, but the other bowlers werenot very difficult. Southland’s innings lasted for 109 minutes. The Australians opened well, Richards and Bogle playing patiently and correctly. Liddicutt and Lampard followed. Bogle batted brightly, but Richardson, who was almost stonewalling, was hard to shift. His 39 runs were made in 64 minutes. About this time Mcßeath, who plays for New Zealand in the first test, was taken off the southern end, where he had taken no wickets for 26 runs. With the breeze behind him he kept a beautiful length and bowled in brilliant style, taking four wickets, including Ransford’s, for 25 runs. The last wicket partnership between Iremonger and Hornibrook was a spectacular display. Both men went for the bowling, and although they were missed several times, they added nearly fifty runs to the score. The Australians batted for two and a half hours. The veteran, Doig, bowled unchanged throughout, and kept down the runs well. The home fielding was patchy. The scores are: —• SOUTHLAND. First Innings.
